About The Neighbourhood
A popular spot for young families and first-time buyers, Wychwood has seen so many renovations of late that it’s fast becoming equally popular among more established families looking for a step-up home. Look to the southern end of the community and you’ll also find a sizable population of empty nesters living in larger homes situated on wider lots.
Over the past five years, St. Clair Avenue West – the neighbourhood’s northern border – has seen quite a transformation, with independent coffee shops and trendy restaurants opening to the delight of those seeking a good latte, a spot of brunch, or a date night close to home. Besides locals, these establishments attract clientele from neighbourhoods as nearby as Forest Hill and Deer Park, and as far south as the Annex.
Look to the south of Wychwood – along Davenport Road and its neighbouring Davenport Village – and you’ll find more independent coffee shops and restaurants opening up. These are a welcome addition to a neighbourhood that has historically been a quiet thoroughfare between central Toronto and the west end.
Given the area’s demographic, family-focused shops and services thrive in and around Wychwood, such as children’s hair salons, child-oriented martial arts studios, toy stores, and family-friendly restaurants.
Located in the heart of the neighbourhood, Artscape Wychwood Barns is a cultural go-to spot for Wychwood and Humewood residents encompassing live-in workspace for artists, art programs for kids, a community-run gallery, seasonal festivals, a weekend farmers market, a greenhouse, and administrative facilities for non-profit organizations – plus park facilities and an off-leash area for four-legged family members.
Speaking of parks, two summertime favourites for families with kids are Humewood Park, which is north of St. Clair Avenue, and Hillcrest Park, which is on the southern border of Wychwood. For year-round enjoyment, there are also community centres, libraries and nearby skating arenas.

Easy access to downtown is a huge asset for Wychwood residents. Public transit is very convenient, thanks to two nearby subway stations, the St. Clair streetcar, and buses that run along Vaughan Road, Christie Street, Bathurst Street and Davenport Road.
By car, downtown is just 15 minutes away. Get to know the side streets through Wychwood and areas to the south like Christie Pits, Bickford Park and Little Italy, and the drive could be even shorter.

Coffee In The Hood
Lion Coffee
08.21.2018Lion Coffee is located on St. Clair Ave West and situated on the western side of Toronto’s Wychwood neighbourhood and on the border of the Regal Heights community. Having heard so many positive things about Lion Coffee, I decided to stop in and give it a try - after getting stuck in a miserable downpour while dropping off my daughter at daycare. Luckily, you can generally find a parking spot on one of the side streets or on St Clair Ave - just be aware of the no parking times.
Lion Coffee opened in May 2018 and replaced one of the many cannabis dispensaries that were closed down. Local residents were pleased to see a new indie coffee shop grace this stretch of St. Clair, west of Winona, where an increase of future residential and commercial development is also proposed. The owners Hazel (Lead Barista) and Kata (Chocolatier), ex-De Mello Palheta employees, decided to team up and offer their expertise in coffee and chocolate to the St Clair West community. In the short time they have been open, it has become a local go-to spot for residents. The feel inside Lion is fresh, modern and welcoming and I love the fact you can see right back into Kata’s yummy chocolate ‘factory’.
When I found out that Hazel is serving up De Mello roasts, I decided I would order my usual double shot Americano, which was excellent. I also took home four of Kata’s beautiful and mouth-watering chocolates to share with my wife and daughter.
If you’re looking for a great treat, stop in and have an espresso with one of Kata’s chocolates and you will surely satisfy your cravings! Also, these chocolates make for a beautiful gift --- thinking ahead to Valentine’s Day 2019!

BOB Coffee Bar
08.27.2017In what seems like an overnight transformation, the southwest corner of Davenport and Christie, has morphed from a local variety store, to what is now a neighbourhood favourite for hot and cold coffee beverages. BOB Coffee Bar has quickly touched the hearts and taste buds of Davenport Village and Hillcrest residents alike. And more recently, these same residents have frequented this chic coffee bar for a late afternoon or evening alcoholic beverage, with its acquisition of a liquor license to serve beer and wine.
BOB’s, as it is more commonly referred to, is located at the eastern end of Davenport Village. Another indie establishment, The Sovereign, commands the west side of the Village. BOB is a welcome addition to a neighbourhood that seems to consistently present pleasant surprises to the gentrifying residential area below the Davenport escarpment. We continue to see smaller coffee shops and take-out restaurants popping up along the Davenport stretch and we will surely enjoy more culinary additions, as young families are purchasing starter and step-up homes in this fabulous central Toronto neighbourhood. Davenport Village is one of my top neighbourhoods to watch in midtown Toronto.
As is stated on the wall at BOB’s, “In Bob We Trust” --- and trust we do, as BOB has brought us superb coffee and a great spot to work, or to meet and chat with friends. The atmosphere is casual, relaxed and fun. The staff are happy, helpful and love chatting with neighbourhood residents. I tend to stick to my usual americano or latte, however, the specialty “treat” drinks like the Bad Ass Hot Cocoa, a well-proportioned mix of milk, cocoa, freshly shaved cinnamon and nutmeg, topped off with a few marshmallows. It is sure to bring you back - over and over again. Petite Thuet and Dufflet supply wonderful desserts that are delicious, and perfect for a #foodiegram. You will also find several great sandwich options, if you are looking for a quick bite. Be sure to stop in at BOB’s and enjoy the great coffee and atmosphere.

Krave Coffee
08.14.2017What are you ‘Kraving’ this week? For those who know me well, my diet doesn’t consist of too much dairy, but from time to time I do like to indulge and enjoy an awesome latte. And that’s just how I decided to start out my week at Krave Coffee on St. Clair Avenue West.
Krave has become one of the go-to indie coffee shops for residents living in the Humewood, Wychwood and Oakwood Village neighbourhoods in midtown Toronto. It is housed in a historic building that features large arched windows that allow the light to flood in. This is a great feature, and likely one of the reasons why so many young professionals flock here with their Macs in tow to bang out some work at 8:30AM on a Monday morning. Weekends at Krave attract many young families to the shop for a morning muffin, scone or big cookie (in the jars) and of course, a coffee fix for parents looking to get a pick-me-up
This summer, the Krave Coffee owners will be opening their juice shop right next door and true to its roots, it will be called Krave Juice. Their patio will surely be buzzing having both Krave Coffee and Krave Juice attracting locals that wish to soak up the sun or do some work while sipping a tasty summer drink.
If you haven’t had the chance to indulge in a Krave latte, I suggest popping in if you live in the hood. If you are passing through St Clair West, parking is super easy as Krave is lucky to have a Green P parking lot right next door.
It is abundantly clear that the locals crave what the owners of Krave have to offer. It will surely continue to be one of my regular spots. See you soon @Kravecoffee.

The Sovereign
07.17.2017It’s Monday morning and I just dropped my daughter off at daycare without a hitch – now that’s a rarity on a Monday --- we are off to a great start to the week. I decide to knock off some of my morning tasks at The Sovereign Cafe on Davenport. This espresso bar has become a local favourite in the 4 years it's been open.
The Sovereign is a great gathering place in the Davenport Village neighbourhood, an area that has continued to gentrify over the past 10 years. The takeout location is located just around the corner at the bottom of Oakwood Avenue right at Davenport. It is amazing that they can sustain two locations within a 5-minute walk of one another – it’s a testament to the quality of their products and service and the true support that their local customers give them.
At around 8:20AM a stream of regular’s pop in for their morning espresso-based drinks. As the neighbourhood regulars step through the door these baristas are “on” their orders. I got my regular, a Double Americano, which is up there as one of my favourites in the city. I also treated myself to a Banana Chocolate Chip Muffin, which was still warm and oozing chocolate – this is one you shouldn’t miss.
The Sovereign is just one of those places where you can easily get used to coming back every day. Good Company, Good Food, Great Coffee. If you have time to stop by on the weekend, be sure to try out their weekend brunch. I will see you again soon @Sovereigncafe.
